Dr. Sarju Patel was born and raised in Ohio, where he was instilled with a love for sports.
He eventually found his way to the east coast for college, graduating with honors from Brown University. Originally planning for a career in international health, he went on to receive graduate training in research sciences at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, England. While in England, he realized the need for medical training and proceeded to attend the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, graduating with a distinction in research, earning a Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Research Fellowship, and being conferred the Harold B. Lamport Biomedical Research Award.
After completing a preliminary internal medicine internship at St-Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, Dr. Patel completed his ophthalmology residency at New York University, followed by fellowship at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he received the Cless Family Foundation Award for outstanding fellow in clinical and academic ophthalmology. Dr. Patel then joined the faculty of the Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Ophthalmology, serving as the Director of Uveitis and Ocular Immunology, before eventually landing in Sacramento and joining Retinal Consultants.

Dr. Patel has authored papers and textbook chapters and routinely presents at national meetings. He has also served as a peer-reviewer for several ophthalmology journals. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Uveitis Society, and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is a past President, Program Chair, and Treasurer of the Alta Ophthalmology Society in Sacramento. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Beyond his work in Sacramento, Dr. Patel travels regularly to Myanmar to volunteer his time and energy, fighting to prevent blindness by treating underserved populations and teaching local physicians. If you ever meet Dr Patel be sure to complement his Buckeyes.
